Holiday Tipping and Gifting Guide
It’s the end of the year, full of holiday cheer…and time to give a little extra. Every year during the holiday season it is a kind gesture to give a little something to show your appreciation to your door staff, mail person, newspaper delivery person etc. But how much and what is appropriate?
If there is a person you work with regularly, and know well, give a thoughtful gift based on your relationship and what you know about them. Gifts with a personal touch are most appreciated, but less personal gifts like a plate of baked goods, or a candle are also welcomed. In some circumstances, the best you can do is cash. And don’t forget to send a card with some kind words of your appreciation. Here are some guidelines:
Doormen/Staff in an Apartment or Condo Building – Fund for all Staff
Renting – Contribute between 5-10% of your monthly rent
Own – Contribute between one third and one half of your monthly HOA fees
Newspaper Delivery Person
Gift card with value between $20-$25
Mail Carrier
Small gift, they are unable to accept any monetary gifts or gift cards (only up to $50 annually, so steer clear of this)
Regular Cleaning Person/Household Staff (that comes weekly or monthly)
Tip the equivalent of one session/cleaning and/or a small gift
Full time Domestic Help - Nanny, Cook, Butler (daily)
Give a personal, thoughtful gift and a ‘tip’ equivalent to a month’s pay
Contractor you use throughout the year but not monthly
Baked goods/gift basket etc.
